Nicholas Rowe digs in the caverns of his mind for lessons learned and experiences to share. He bears it all with vulnerable lyrics, whiskey-soaked vocals, and alt-folk rhythms, an admirable combination that creates a staggering and profound listening experience. - The Music Mermaid [full article] "There is a story within Everything Has Beauty–the story of a man making sense of his flaws and finding beauty in them–all in a timeless, acoustic style." - Indie Soul Media [full article] "Experience beauty here... Somewhere between Conor Oberst and Mark Eitzel. All performed with a striking voice." - Turn Up The Volume [full article] "Rowe explores the tension between who we are and who we want to be... Captivating, introspective... with an appealing, melancholic feel. No special effects, just heart & soul and a notable voice." - 50ThirdAnd3rd [full article] ““ 'Everything Has Beauty' is definitely a vulnerable piece of work, and... Rowe is the type of person who feels every note that he strums out.' - Music In Motion [full article] "A must listen... honest and captivating!" - Find A Song [full article] "This raw, emotional need to help others shines through all of Nicholas' music... a great, authentic musician." - The Corner Type [full article] "This music is therapeutic, but slightly disquieting. And very vulnerable." - Tuned Up [full article] “Such a rich, full sound... Everyone should be listening to these guys. If you’re a fan of Mumford & Sons, Tom Waits or anything in between, you’ll definitely dig this band.” - Hear Me Out [full article] “Nicholas Rowe & The Forgotten Sons of Steel River was started with Nicholas’ best friend Jeremiah and his wife Gena. ‘Yes there is actually a daughter in ‘The Forgotten Sons.’ He says their first EP has an ‘Indie/Folk Americana’ sound with some Gospel and Rock influence." N Here's that uninteresting timeline I mentioned. 2004-2017 (definitely non-exhaustive though)
OK so I've often said that there's a piece of this album in every song I've written since the first time I heard it. What do I mean by that? Let me go ahead and unpack it before I get sued.
The truth is I mean a LOT OF THINGS. This album got me interested in jangly, acoustic guitar playing and open D tuning. It made me want to be a folk musician and single-handedly started my migration away from writing "Rock" songs. It taught me that it's possible to use songs to tell rich, detailed stories with nuanced characters and intriguing plotlines and made me strive to bring that to my writing. But It also means that in some ways the stories and songs have stayed with me and they show up in my writing in unexpected ways; ways that most of the time only I really know. For example, if my song mentions a hotel, I might be imagining that its the same hotel they stop into in "Simple Twist of Fate." If it mentions a bar, it might be the bar from "Tangled Up in Blue" I don't do it on purpose. It just is what it is. So that is what I mean. It's an amazing album that's had a huge influence on me, as I'm sure it has on hundreds of other songwriters through the decades. I most certainly do not mean that I've intenionally copied lyrics, or melody lines from this album... Just so we're clear. haha. Till next time, Nicholas And btw: Though this is the album I mention most, its one of about 15 albums that I would consider to be MAJOR influences in my development as a writer... The complete list will have to wait for another day... |
